We have a two local metals suppliers here in Rochester, NY. They're pretty
easy to do business with. You can buy both full length (24 ft) and 1/2
length stock, pretty much whatever you want, at a reasonable price.
As I recall from an older Rohn catalog, the 54' version specified load was
185 lbs, I think!

I should have been more clear on the mast and base. The mast is steel, 2
inch diameter. I haven't weighed it, but it is very heavy-no doubt it will
push me over the limit. Where did you get the aluminum one? Also, the
reason it uses J bolts is that it has a base plate that was fabricated out
of 1/4 inch steel and it does tilt, but this is a regular foldover tower. I
think that even with the mast and the proposed antennas (the 40 meter has
traps and capacity hats and I haven't acquired the 6 meter antenna yet, but
I am not looking for a long boom variety) I should be OK. Also, seems that
by leaving out a section at the top, I could increase the weight at the top.
I am fortunate to live on a hilltop (990 feet-yes, on the prairie its
considered a hilltop) and from what I've read, performance wouldn't suffer
very much if any by going to 54 feet of tower. Thanks again for the
