Not necessarily so!
At my prior QTH I had 3 G5RV slopers with 102 feet overall (on the flat
top) and about 30 or so feet of 300 Ohm twinlead feeding a 1:1
(W1JR style) current balun to an RG8 line. I operated from 3.5-3.8 MHz and
the entire 40 meter band and never used a tuner (except that which was in
the transceiver or amplifier when used). Yes, on 80 meters the VSWR wasn't
1:1 but it surely was within the range of the transceiver tuner.
On two occasions I purchased a tuner. Both times I sold them soon
afterwards and never used them. Too much grief for this guy that band hops
continuously.
