You ground radio types had all the fun!
Was in a mobile outfit most of the time so our ground radio types used a
discone
with a skirt and those HY-Gain stainless steel tape measure dipoles.
Overseas
with a base (non-mobile) band of miscreants
it was a big "VEE" fed with ladder line and a HUGE amp. It was rumoured
that
birds would burst into flames if they flew too close...HI!
