Never ever nail or screw anything into a tree. Once you do this you open up
the bark you invite pests and disease. this can real hurt the tree. When
tree bark grows around something it is like a scab on a sore. Just like when
you stick a foreign object into your skin. Contrary to what a lot on here
believe it is not safe for the tree.
If you have to use a tree as a support then cover the wire in a piece of old
garden hose to protect the bark of the tree.
Ok tree hugging session is now over :-)

BTW I am not really a tree hugger. If a tree is in the way on my place I
will chop it down, but if it is growing out away from everything in the
field I let it grow.
If you live in the city or the suburbs then you really need to take care of
the trees you have.
