Hi Barry,
I went through the same decision a few years ago. I own a Hexbeam and I can
tell you that it will hang with any of the short boom multibanders. I've come
to this conclusion competing with locals in pileups. The hexbeam is a compromise
2 element yagi. How much of a compromise ? A whopping .5 db. Will you notice
the difference on the air ? I seriously doubt it. I spoke to Tom @ force
12about discernable on air differences between antennas with respect to gain.
They have a C3SS set up with a C-19 on their antenna range. The antennas are so
close that little or no difference is perceived. There is about a 1 db
difference between these antennas. How much gain does it take to notice the
difference? How low is your noise floor? How good is the rest of your station?
Thats a hard question to answer. There have been in depth discussions on this
topic on this reflector. You should also consider if you want the WARC bands.I
think these are important for DX and to get some breathing room during
contesting. The 5 band Hexbeam will conservatively speaking present half the
weight and wind loading of a competive yagi or Log periodic. I use a channel
master 9515 rotor with no problems ( $130 at AES). You would need something
like a Yeasu G-800 ( $400) to turn a competing yagi or Log. Just my opinon
Barry FWIW. Good luck and have fun! JOHN W3UX
