The consensus seems to be that the unit I was
trying to describe  was built by B&W (Barker and 
Williamson).  Also,  that Heathkit had one by the
late 50's which added a "lid" to the unit,  it is thought
their model number was "BN-1",  not an absolute
however.

Anyway,  thanks to the several who played the memory
lane game with me.

73,  Jim KH7M  (W6KPI in 1950 and for the next 43 years!)
