I like to use a "post pounder"...a heavy steel tube with a metal "slug"
in one end. It is normally used for driving in steel Tee posts for
fencing. When the rod has been beat in with that, down to within
say, 3 feet of earth, then I use a sledge hammer to finish the job.
Post Pounders can be found at any well-stocked farm supply store.
