I also have an old 204BA up temporarily and with no rope and it makes
no noise. I cannot see the rope playing any role in making "rattles"
go away unless, perhaps the clamps are not tight...in which case your
antenna will indeed be temporary ;-)
Sounds like you have some sort of loose mechanical "feature".
