You might want to take a look at K7NV's web site for his Yagistress 
software.  Kurt has published a very interesting study there of guyed tower 
mechanics, using finite element analysis software to assess how placement 
of wind loads and guy points affects stress concentrations and potential 
failure modes.  While little of this is directly applicable to 
self-supporting towers, with or without guy wires, the article does serve 
to illustrate the complexity of the problem.  Kurt has another article on 
the site with some very interesting observations about various guying 
materials, their characteristics, and things like pre-tensioning.
