I did just that on a 5 el 40m yagi that I built a couple of years ago. The
boom is 60 feet of square aluminum tower and I wanted to not only reduce the
torque effects  but to have some way of making sure everything stayed
level - the boom seemed to want to end up slightly off level on one end.

I used 1/2 PEX tubing (used in floor radiant heat systems - extremely tough
tubing!)  to prevent chafing at the cross over points.
