I'm glad you brought up the business about Steve & Ward's (otherwise
excellent) tribander report. It's a real shame that the ONE antenna that
got botched was the XA. It's impossible to model that thing with all those
trombone slides attached to it. It sure would have been interesting to see
how the XA stacks up to the more recent designs :-(

I've used the KLM KT-34XA for about 20 years. It's a very
good antenna, still used by many very successful contesters.
Recently, a friend of mine purchased a
KT-36XA and I had an opportunity to look it over. I was
impressed with the improved mechanical design of the 36XA.
On the old KLM, one was lucky if all of the interconnections
totalled less than 0.5 ohm (DC) on each element half. On the M2
antenna, this resistance was not measurable with an ordinary
DVM. It does use traps, but the traps are made of concentric
aluminum tubing for the capacitance, and shorted transmission
line stubs for inductance, a very Hi-Q arrangement. The entire
boom length is used on each band.
Someone is sure to bring up the Tribander Comparison Report,
which panned the KT-34XA. Unfortunately, that report tested a
defective sample of the KT-34XA, and the data is not
representative of a properly functioning unit.
The specs on the C31XR look almost as good, and the specs on
the 4 el Steppir look slightly better (except 10M f/b). I
would guess that all three of these big tribanders are
about equal, and no difference would be noted in actual use.
By the way, I think 80 feet is rather high for your only 10 meter
antenna. You might consider something else at about 45' for 10 meters.
Shutting down the e-mail for two days for the annual migration
back to Yuma, AZ.
