Bill,
You don't say if you are ground-mounting the vertical or mounting the
vertical elevated on a mast or building.
I'm guessing you are ground mounting.
If that's the case, what I did was I 'threaded' the radial wires through the
grass, keeping it as close to the dirt as possible.  I laid down 24 of them
when I had the vertical ground mounted.  I've not seen them since.
If you are elevating the vertical and using the radials as guys, I just used
nylon string and 2' long pieces of rebar as 'guy' anchors when I elevated
the vertical to about 8 ft.  When the vertical is not in use, I pull up the
anchors and wind up the radials so I can mow.
