Use the pipe insulation. It's closed cell while the packing material is
usually open cell. The pipe insulation is also inexpensive. It comes in 3'
lengths and those can be purchased in bundles. It's made to just slip over
pipes. Works great to keep the water pipes from sweating in a humid
basement.
