I would make the earth connection when not using the switch. The Ameritron
5 pole switch that I use has an option to ground each pole when not
energized. All you do is solder a jumper for each relay. Using this option
all 5 poles are grounded when power to the control box is switched off.

As a general rule I like to keep all coax cables in the shack connected at
all times. This prevents arcing. I designed and built a disconnect box
that shorts the center to the shield when power is turned off. This reduces
the possibility that high voltage coming through the arrestor will travel
through rig circuitry while finding its way to ground. This box also has a
relay for power as well and when switched off grounds the power cords to the
rigs.

With this debate that is now going....and one I appreciate as I am about to
erect my tower and will be looking for clues/cures to this problem. I read
and understand now the point about not UNDOING the coax cable and leaving it
hanging, I have been guilty of doing exactly that. My question is I have a 6
pole antenna switch in my shack. If I was to connect a length of coax to one
pole and then earth the other end and then when I leave my shack I switch to
the pole that I have earthed, would it help or am I just adding to the bon
fire?
