I have a multi-band, ground mounted vertical amongst a forest of huge white
pines and oaks. When I moved to this QTH, I was ready with a bulldozer to
clear my acreage for the antenna farm I always envisioned. But when I took
another look at these giants up close I realized they'd were here long
before me, and be here long after. So, I opted to forgo the dozer and use a
smaller tower, and a vertical. My vertical has eighty-seven 33' radials
which are now buried by pine needles and leaves; you don't even know they're
there. Performance is stellar on all bands although I had some tuning
problems on 40 due to the large number of radials used. These commercial
verticals dial in a significant amount of ground losses. I think that's why
you can mount them to a pipe and get a good VSWR. A bit of inductance added
to the base of the antenna solved it. So, the vertical seems to work for me
at the performance level I'm happy with. However, what you're looking for
may be somewhat different than mine.
