Anyone selling such materials MUST (by law) be able to supply the MSDS
(material safety data sheets) for it. Tell the people offering you the
stuff that you need the MSDS, (Which often has the ID of the major
ingredients).

this isn't precisely true. You need to have MSDS for things sold for
occupational use (as in sales to an employer), because it satisfies OSHA
requirements. Retail products (called "consumer producs" in the rules) need
not have MSDS information. For instance, you can't ask the supermarket (or
the mfr) for a MSDS for soup, or for dishwashing detergent, for example.

"OSHA requires MSDS's ONLY for materials that a) meet OSHA's definition of
hazardous and b) are "known to be present in the workplace in such a manner
that employees may be exposed under normal conditions of use or in a
foreseeable emergency".

Some companies selling products into the retail market (but NOT to
businesses, per se) don't provide MSDS information because that would
require revealing composition of the product at some level. Check out:
http://www.ilpi.com/msds/osha/I19900516A.html for an opinion letter from
OSHA which talks about why retailers don't have to provide MSDS info.

Much, much more info at http://www.ilpi.com/msds/faq/ which says, among
other things:
"As mentioned previously and discussed below, manufacturers and distributors
are under no OSHA obligation to supply MSDS's to consumers"
