You won't even need to solder the washers, Dick. I've used that method for
years and it works great. Be sure you use a big soldering gun though, or it
will take forever to get much solder into the braid. I use an old Weller,
"dual headlamp" model. I also dress the ends a bit with a file to round
them off, and I use a hammer and anvil (back end of my vice actually) to get
them nice and flat (not thin, just flat). Then I clean off all the flux and
end up with nice, custom length ground straps. Just use the washers loose
between the strap and the wing nut (or thumb screw, or whatever).

If I were to use 1/2" tinned braid for grounding straps between the "radio"
and my ground bus strap, what would be the preferred method of attaching the
braid to the radio and to the bus. It would seem to me that by crunching it
all up and then crimping on a lug that you might be defeating some of the
properties for using braid in the first place. I was thinking of tinning the
ends. Then drilling a hole then soldering on washers on either side of the
braid and attaching in that manner. Thoughts would be appreciated.
