Dino,

This is the same technique we used at one of the phone companies to remove 
utility poles. First the pole was cut exposing four feet of pole stump. A 
special hydraulic jack was placed next to the stump and chains attached. The 
jack only had a lift of about two feet. The jack was then energized until no 
further lift was possible, de-energized, chains repositioned, and the action 
repeated until pole was absolutely loosened. 

Sure beat the heck out of using self-starting shovels and digging the bloody 
things out.
