Finally, one I can answer. On the pier drilling machine I used to own, 
there was an additional blade that used centrifugal force to bell the hole 
bottom. The trick was turn the auger faster to bell the hole, then pull 
back extra hard/fast to get the cuttings and bit out of the hole. This of 
course doesn't work for square holes.....
