This is for a laterally supported load (no side, or tipping forces).
My opinion:
I'd be very uncomfortable with more than half that on a Ham M or Ham IV, BUT
even 400# is a *lot* of weight. Not many ham antenna instalations get that
heavy. Even my large array with mast is probably not much more than that
(*maybe* 600# ). So, with that in mind I'd not be uncomfortable swinging
any large tri-bander or reasonable size monobander well within the wind area
limits.
I like the Ham series of rotators, but the one thing I don't like for large
rotational forces is the brake. Even on a medium tri-bander I think they
are fine, but on something with a lot of wind area, that sucker can come
around in a hurry when you release the brake on a windy day. OTOH the HDR
series uses an on/off switch instead of the spring loaded one used on the
ham series, so I much prefer the Ham series if the wind load is within
reason.
