 know of one UK ham who made up a contraption with 2 inch diameter scaffold 
pipe and 3/8 square elastic. The pipe arms went into the ground and he had a 
winch arrangement to stretch the elastic.......and a trigger arrangement to let 
it go. He claimed he could line it up, hammer the pipe ends into the ground 
about a foot to hold it, and put a tennis ball up over 150 feet with quite 
heavy line - he said the throw was about 5 feet. Bit like a Roman ballista!
I use a bow and arrow and waxed lacing cord for line, bought for $1 per 1000 
foot roll in the Dayton flea market. The waxing helps it slide over branches. 
But I only go to about 40 feet.
