Bob, frankly I can't comment on the theoretical aspects here. I have
never worked with the terrain programs. (However, they are on my to-do
list.)
Reasoning intuitively though, one could argue that if the hilltop
terrain slopes off sharply enough, you're creating the equivalent of a
high tower. Beyond that I'd have to go back to the books to get up to
speed on the theoretical details.
What raised the original question in my mind is that before moving here
to VA, I lived just below (about 50') the top of a hill in NJ
overlooking the Raritan Valley. I was confident that the top of my
antenna "saw" over the top of the hill. However, my subjective
assessment of how effectively I got out was "nothing special", and I had
concluded that hilltop locations were not that much of an advantage
relative to unobstructed flat terrain.
When I moved here to VA, I had installed a 40M EDZ on the top of the
hill, where our new house was being built, and fed it from the original
farm house 400' lower down in the hollow with 1200' of ladder line. The
height of the antenna over the ground immediately below it was only
about 35'. Nevertheless, I was shocked at how well I seemed to get out
on all bands. (Admittedly, a subjective assessment.) Then, my friend
from Va Tech came by for a visit and commented on what an ideal location
the hilltop was for HF antennas. Sometime after that the terrain
analysis was done, which confirmed my experiences and my friend's
technical judgment. It was suggested that my inferior performance in NJ
was because the antenna was not at the very top of the hill.
This may be a good winter for me to learn something about terrain
analysis. Thanks for your comments.
