Bill,
I used two pieces of 3 inch o.d. by 0.125 inch wall aluminum tubing in all of
my 48 foot boom Yagis. Its an excellent choice.
Like you, I've never found a standars product to splice the booms. I purchased
steel tubing from Dillsburg Aeroplane Works, cut it into two foot lengths, and
used a lathe to reduce the diameter to about 2.65 o.d. and had it galvanized.
I'm sure you could also use aluminum tubing for the same purpose.
Perhaps there's a better way, but I'm unaware of it.
