I forgot to answer one part of your question with respect to the ability to
bend the LMR 600. Yes, you can bend the cable in the 4 inch PVC 45 degrees
with no problem. I ran two runs of the 600 cable through the same 3 inch
PVC and made three 90 degree turns with no problems.

Mike, any idea on how your R8 performs vs. another vertical, say a ground
mounted type with radials? I think that would be very interesting.

I have a couple of R8 Verticals that are elevated and they work pretty well.
The do not require any radials. Most other verticals will require radials.
Even the BigIR requires radials.

Actually - the report that K7LXC did, is a good, well written report, with
good experimental data to back up the claims. It certainly helped me make
an informed decision based on DATA as opposed to opinions.....

While we didn't test the SteppIR, there are a bunch of other
verticals that we tested in our vertical antenna comparison report
available at _www.championradio.com/publications.html_

I don't have any other verticals to compare it to. I don't know if the
publication K7LXC was citing includes the R8. I worked plenty of DX with it
this weekend but I don't have anything to comapare it to. I am surprised by
what I can work at times though.

Yes, it does include the R8, but it wasn't elevated much and there
was a ground screen. Based on the results quoted, I was seriously
looking at the R8, but the AV-640 is nearly identical except for not
using traps and I went with that.
Steve and Ward's yagi report is also excellent. I worked on antenna
ranges for many years in the aerospace industry and couldn't find
anything to fault in their test methods.

Interesting thoughts. I NEVER ran any Polyphasers etc on my rotor cables.
Everything was disconnected at the bulkhead by Cinch-Jones plugs.
Amazingly
even though I had lots of rotors on the 200 foot towers, I never had a
rotor
failure from a lightning hit...mechanical damage from wind etc, but no
electrical problems. My gut feeling is there are few direct hits on the
rotor
cables and most of the damage from non-disconnected stems from the induced
voltage of the hit and perhaps providing a great ground for the main
lighting
charge to travel to ground through the house mains by way of a short,
jumping from
the tower or coax to the cable.

Hi Gang,
I'm looking for two strands of Andrews LDF4-50A (1/2" hardline) of about
110'
each.
Anyone have some lengths laying around, not being used?

Is LMR600 or the equivalent too stiff to pass through three 45-degree sweeps
in a 4" PVC? How about with an 89' crank-up tower? I am trying to decide
whether to reuse my Davis RF Bury-Flex or replace it. This antenna, a 4L
SteppIR, will have 6M on it, and I've never had to be concerned with
attenuation for that band before.

I don't disconnect anything since I finished the ground system installation.
That's mainly because the connections are too difficult to get at and the
storm would be past by the time I could get them disconnected.
Since the ground system was finished I've had no damage yet the tower takes
at least 3 direct hits on average per year. It was five the first half of
this past summer. I say at least as those have been observed.
IF I recall correctly Tom said he didn't disconnect anything either, but
I've only seen one post from him in recent months. I understand he's over on
the amps reflector.
