Dick,

One of my transmitting antennas is a 1/4 wavlength-long 160M inverted-L with 
direct 50 ohm feed, and it works just fine.

As long as your transmitter can handle reasonable VSWRs, up to perhads 2:1, 
direct feed will work fine.
