There are at least 3 versions.
One, is just a plain "dirt base" which looks like a short tower section 
with plates welded on the sides.  Bore a hole large enough for it to 
fit, drop in, fill with sand and you are on your way.  Another is the 3 
drive in rods , and a third is a baseplate with a sharp metal wedge on 
the bottom.   Aligning the drive in rods can be a problem while the 
metal plate is/was for temporary use like field day.
The dirt base will work fine, depending on the soil, and now much load 
is put on the tower. I would not go beyond a medium size tribander.  I 
don't remember if they require two or three sets of guys. If I get a 
chance I'll look it up later today.
