Jim, You are totally correct. I STAND CORRECTED..the one I mentioned a
short while ago was not the Icom but the DIAMOND discone. A senior moment
here to be sure...but it has lasted 15 years and still going strong. -Mike

Bill,

"Diamond" (tm) made a Discone antenna. They are now part of RF Parts.
You can get some info at:

  http://rfparts.com/diamond/

They still show the two models of the Diskcone in the catalog. See:

http://rfparts.com/diamond/Product_Catalog/base_station.html

The Diskcone is a very simple antenna and the only adjustment is the spacing
between the cone and disk. I seem to recall this was a fixed insulator on
the Diamond antenna.

I have a homebrewed one in my attic for bench work on VHF/UHF radios. Mine
covers 144/220/440 bands with less than 1.5:1 SWR. I built it many years ago
using 1/4 in spacing galvanized hardware cloth. It spent about 12 years
mounted on top of the mast above the TH6DXX and worked very well.

Good luck.
