All comments have been very interesting, but I think Steve may have
already
nailed this thing with the comment about having MULTIPLE antennas to choose
from. One may hear better ( or transmit ) than the other at any given time
due to variables. It pays to have choices. This may or may not be
possible
for some. '73 all. Enjoy the Easter Weekend. - Mike

It certainly is important, especially for contesting. Back in FL I had a
4 high stack for 20 at 200/150/100/50 which was capable of all four, upper
two, bottom two or out of phase. I also had several tribanders at various
heights, including a lowly Cushcraft A-3 at 40 feet. One Sunday afternoon
during WPX, although I couldn't generate a good run on 20 with any
combination of the massive stack, the A-3 produced an enormous run to the
northeast
and midwest. Who would have figured?

Bigger is not always better, but more choices are.
