I was surprised to get a competent-sounding person on the phone when I
called BoltDepot.com to find out what grade of steel is used for their
hot-dip galvanized bolts. Having vastly exceeded my expectations - I
expected to get a "we don't make 'em, we just sell 'em" kind of answer - I
recommend them for your fastener needs, or at least when you need useful
information.
BTW, their answer on galvanized bolts was that theirs are grade 2 - not up
to snuff to the grade 5 bolts I'm replacing. He corroborated what I read at
other sites re: increased coating thickness requiring over-tapped nuts. The
ASTM A325 HD galvanized bolts I'm finding start at 1/2" diameter. Since I
can't find the 3/8" bolts I need in a galvanized finish, I'm going with zinc
plated grade 5 and following the recommendation of an earlier TT post-er to
coat them with RTV to retard corrosion.
Unless someone knows where to get these bolts? McMaster-Carr, Grainger,
Mutual Screw (!), Portland Bolt... all no joy. None of the usual suspects
has them outside of a complete product kit - I checked with Rohn, Texas
Towers and R&L.
