Well, it could still be in the rotor... if there is something wrong with the
pot it could cause those symptoms in the control box also.  Measure the
resistance from end to end, it should be 500 ohms.  Also measure the
resistance from the wiper to each end as you rotate it, you should get a
smooth transition from 0 to 500 each way.  If not, it could be the pot is
bad... or there could be water or another problem with the cable.
