It all depends on what is available and when. Surplus sales are nothing like
they used to be since the DMRO turned everything over to a private contractor
back in the 90s. There are still limited local auctions at several places. You
just need to keep watching the websites or get on their mailing list.
There are items that must be demil'd, and that changes time to time.

Steve,
Thanks for the the followup information. No antenna masts are showing up
as available through the surplus auctions. I was told that the
communications gear was automatically declared something like "classified -
destroy
function before allowing scrap". After talking with a yard person, it is my
understanding that they have to break/crush the items before allowing the raw
material to be sold as scrap. I think I also asked about availability via
local government agencies. Anyhow, I got the impression that there was no way
to obtain the material without a commodity designation change from real high
up the chain of command.
Luckily, the aluminum sections I get do not have an original communications
purpose.
