I figured it was something like that.  I remember that it smelled like 
Vinegar when I heated the shrink wrap.

Either way, something sure messed up those connectors!  I've never used 
silicone on them again.  Just Scotch Mastic (2228) and Scotch 33+ electrical 
tape.  Never had another connector failure in over 10 years now.  I've done 
hundreds if not thousands of outdoor connections now.  Sure no fun to take 
them back apart, but I figure if I can't get into the connector easily 
neither can water :-).
