I suspect that if an upper section support were to fail, supports for other
seconds below might be stressed to failure by falling sections. I remember
vividly watching this effect on TV on a couple of buildings in September,
2001.
Whatever makeshift/temporary/amateur/untested blocking and support is in
place, these are heavy pieces of metal designed to move, and if they move at
the wrong time because a support of any sort gives way or is unable to
handle the additional weight of climber(s), it's a task one should take
seriously and do whatever you can to mitigate risk. Now that I've owned
both crankup and guyed towers, I'm not planning to again climb a crankup
tower. Rohn 55 is so stable and the foot rungs are far enough apart that I
feel well supported as I climb up, rather than tips of (steel booted) toes
sticking in between nested tower sections.

Is there any reason that in a 3 section tower that the two upper sections do
not have independent cables and winches?? That way if one fails, they both
don't come down.
