It needs to be strong, the smaller Rohn SSV sections have solid legs and
the larger ones use large diameter tubing.  Some tower erectors build
their own gin poles out of straight tower sections.

from a practical point of view, you better have one heck of a gin pole
over 20 ft long, for the sections are 20 ft....


I don't think the gin pole would need to be over 20 feet long unless you
had some sort of requirement to only lift the sections by the upper end.
The gin pole only needs to reach higher than the center of gravity of the
section it's lifting, plus a little bit for practical purposes.
