Me too, 15 months in Goose Bay, Labrador while in the USAF.  It was an Article
15 offense if you were seen running  when the wind chill factor reached -50 or
so.  We had two antennas at the MARS station, VO2HA.  A Mosley tri-bander and a
two element quad.  Both survived the winter I was there, much to our surprise.

In hot rod parlance it would be, "If it won't go, chrome it!"{

I've always thought the same thing.  There's a bit of chest puffing if
you can say that you have a 3 ele Yagi at 330 ft...on 160M. Certainly
nothing wrong with that.

This new 395-page Volume 3 along with  Volumes 1 & 2 provides as many as 75
designs and variations of array  antennas from which to choose for you own
use. If not they give designs that  may be tweaked to compensate for your
environment! Some may be simple wire  construction advancing to tubing.
Antenna arrays are able to produce  radiation patterns that combined, have
characteristics that a single antenna  would not. Getting more from less is
the advantage of learning about these  unique array features.
To learn more about the details and how to  order these books on CD or
download, pl! ease visit this web page:
http://www.antennex.com/Sshack/arrays/arrays.htm
A 15% discount is provided if all 3 Volumes  are purchased.
Volume 1 & 2 were released within the  past 2 month and for those who have
already purchased those 2 Volumes, we  thought it only fair to offer those
customers the same retroactive 15%  discount as well. For that purpose, a
special low price is listed at the  bottom of the above ad page for ordering.
However, this special provision  expires on December 24, 2013 at midnight
GMT, so don't delay the taking  advantage of saving $$$

Duty at Minot, Loring, Thule, etc. gave a whole new meaning to "Cold
Warrior!"

At Minot AFB the lowest temp I was out in was -47F, not wind chill, straight
thermometer. Minus 40 was routine.  Wind chill was reported on the base's
dial up weather report as the time on average it took for exposed flesh to
freeze.  They reported this down to 10 seconds and then just reported it as
less than 10 seconds.  One of our hi-pri considerations was NOT exposing
flesh.

After leaving the USAF and heading south as far as I could go and not leave
the country I went to San Diego State University and during a real cold snap
there was a very light snow, just a few small flakes.  Everyone in my
calculus class including the instructor, EXCEPT ME ran to the window in awe
to see show.  Having just left a 3 winter tour in Minot I was not impressed.

Roger
I spent time at Loring AFB working ECM on B-52s. Late 70s, following a hot
humid tour in Thailand.

Winter was typically -20 deg with wind chills down to -65 and one night down
to -109 deg. Flight line work was not pleasant at those temps.

Took nearly all summer for the mountain of plowed snow in the parking lot to
melt.

SAC Sucks !

Sounds about par for Loring AFB in Caribou, Me. My last CG duty station was
the
LORAN station in Caribou. They have WINTER up there!

I obviously meant to type 100m tower.

It is possible that the 80m beam was too high plus a 2 over 2 array is a
very good antenna. I am sure that they learned a lot about low band
propagating using this monster system. Radio Arcala is an extreme station
with a great mission of giving young hams a place to operate. It took
tremendous effort to assemble these antenna on top of the 300m tower, it
has to be heartbreaking for everyone involve to see it quickly destroyed.

I wonder how well the 160m yagi worked compared to a large vertical array.

John KK9A

It might not have been a very good performer, at least there was
a lot of rumors. They also had a vertical 4 SQ array and as I
understand it it was better.

Also there is questions about the 80m 5 el, they also had a 2/2
80m Yagi stack and it seems that they usually used that one.
