Tom:
I suggest that you do a complete re-install of MicroDEM -- I suggest that
you first uninstall the version you have on your computer now. Then go to:
http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem/microdemdown.htm
and download the "Complete MICRODEM Install". Run it, followed by
downloading the latest executable microdem.exe. This should properly install
all the various files that MicroDEM needs to function properly.
Tell me if this works for you. Meanwhile, USGS has been changing their web
sites dealing with downloading terrain data. It is pretty hard to keep up
with them...

Does anybody on the list know what I can do to get past a couple error
messages I receive when trying to open a DEM file in Microdem? The
error messages are "Need 7z for GZ extraction"
and "xxx is Not an acceptable DEM". I went to the 7z website and
downloaded & installed the 7Z extraction utility, but that didn't help.
Any input would really be appreciated. Been trying to get Microdem
working for months without success.
You're doing this for HFTA, right? Last I heard about this, the formats of
the Microdem data and/or its extraction process have changed over the years
that HFTA has been using them. HFTA author, Dean Straw, has done some talks
about using HFTA, including the Microdem process, most recently in a WebEx
for PVRC. In addition, ARRL has done their best to keep up with the changes,
and I remember Dean pointing us to stuff on the ARRL website. I think you
can find a recording of the WebEx on the PVRC website.
