I think Ian has expressed the main reason for the "Back-desk-grounding-rod".
The word "grounding" should be avoided as a connection to the ground/earth is
not that essential. Getting the different "boxes" connected together is what we
want. That will reduce RFI/EMI and will help protecting the equipment from
power surges.

(Thoughtful authors try to avoid calling it "grounding" or "earthing"
because a connection to the Mother Planet is not the main aim. You
should connect the bonding strip to a mains safety ground as well, but
that was not your main reason for having the bonding strip.)
