How does heating help?  The thermo conductivity of aluminum is very high and
it seems like the inside tube would expand as quickly as the outside one.

    Long time no see. How're you doing?
 
    You'll get lots of answers so here are a couple.  Heat one piece of the 
boom and freeze the other piece. Use some Liquid Wrench  liberally. 
 
    I've found that a chain wrench is REAL handy when  dealing with round 
objects like booms and masts.
