Mechanical fasteners may or may not remain tight through heat cycling,

burial thing is one of the motivators for wanting to weld the
connections.
Can't respond to the material alteration issue as I don't understand
what is meant.

First... reply-all seems to be broke.
On subject, mechanical fasteners are entirely adequate for grounding and
have the advantage of not permanently altering the material of the legs.

I have never had mechanical ground rod fasteners stay tight for a year.
By the end of the spring thaw I have always been able to pull them off
by hand. Hence, I now always use CadWeld "One shot" welds to the ground
rods. I add two for the house electrical ground as well
