You are right. To defend myself, I (we) just adjusted the length until SWR =
1/1. I don't know why nobody did that before.

My way to "get rid" of the capacitor was
to alter the length of the elements. By making them slightly longer you
introduce a capacitance at the feeding point.
I never liked to have a
capacitor in the open as they will be affected by weather-and-wind.
