Hub City recomends a PAG synthetic
PolyAlkyline Glycol lubricants are part of the new API Group V Synthetic
lubricants and have unique characteristics lending themselves to gear
oils. In general they have very high shear friction, associated with
strong cohesive forces in the oil film. This makes them god
high-pressure lubricants when formulated for this use. In general they
are less well suited to high shear-rate applications like high
surface-speed plain bearings.
The newest Oil-Soluble PAGs (abbreviated OSP) can be highly polar and as
such show good affinity to metallic surfaces. Some have extremely high
viscosity indices approaching 200. This means they will show good
performance over a wide range of temperatures. I have no personal
experience with these lubricants, but if Hub City recommends their use,
it would be counter-productive to use anything else.
