A few years back, I built a Gin pole using chain link fence galvanized
top rail. I tested several, but found a 1.5" that was able to easily
lift 2 sections of 45G at once. I used a 16' length to assemble my 45G
(one section at a time and install the antennas. It was very strong and
a bit "springy", but when used properly was more than satisfactory.
I used two homemade clamps to give the pole a rigid connection to the
tower. Height was easily adjustable. I used an offset swivel arm at
the top witha a pulley at the top[ of the pole, the rope attached to the
end of the arm and a free pulley on the rope between the mast pulley and
end of the arm anchor for a 2:1 ratio. It took little effort for one
man to pull the tower sections and antennas up. Wall thickness was
around 3/32nds. It was surprisingly strong.
If going this route, I'd test the sections for strength as I don't know
if they adhere to any standard.

There are many metal supply places around the country where you can order
material cut to size and pick it up. I have done this both in Chicago and
Charlotte. I would use 6061-T6 with a 1/4 wall for that load and you
probably need more than 10 feet. You have a 115 pound load and another 115
pounds pulling down plus some side stress when moving the tower around
obstacles. You will not save any money skimping on the pole material!

Subject: [TowerTalk] Gen Pole 10ft x 2in OD mast pipe

I'm in need of a 2 in OD mast pipe for my Gen Pole . I was looking at EMT
but I see the wall thickness is .065 . I will be lifting 115LB's , I will
have a pulley at the bottom of the tower so the rope will be pulling striate
down .. I'm not sure if EMT is strong enough for this job ? Anyone have a
recommendation , something better then EMT . 2 inch OD 1/8 wall aluminum in
a 10ft length is hard to find .
Thanks Ed N5DG
