The quad that I used the longest was an HQ-2 with continuous loops and
gamma matches. That was about 20 years ago and I seem to remember that the
TH-5 that replaced it did have more rain static. Many years before that I
had a random wire that came right into the shack to a tuner I was trying
out that I had just thrown together on a board. During a snow storm I
walked into the shack and heard a crack...crack...crack, so I looked before
I turned the lights on and it was arcing across the antenna side cap on the
T-tuner. I looked out the window and that wire was about 4 inches in
diameter with all the snow on it. The old TR-3 didn't even hiccough though.
