Just think out loud here......if one were very clever and resourceful imagine a custom made RG-X screw-in reducer for a good quality (silver/Teflon full sized "traditional") PL-259 connector that stuck out an additional 5/8" or so longer then a regular reducer.

This would give you plenty of room to slip over some heavy-duty adhesive heat shrink over the last 2" of coax as well as onto the "ass-end" of the now longer connector/reducer assembly. Once the heat shrink hardened I suspect it would make a pretty durable strain relief.

I wonder what the thread size is for the I.D. of a PL-259 or O.D. of a reducer?

Nice to have a strain relief, but I've yet to see a PL259 barrel that can withstand the casual abuse of FD "help" - dropping on the end, stepping on it, dragging thru the mud, etc.  Once bent, they need replaced.  There isn't any reason IMO the threaded section can't be made much thicker for about $0.05.  Anybody know of a source?

The local radio club is opting to replace the ancient feedlines we use at Field Day. It looks like we will be going to RG-8X. I have crimped many connectors and have the proper tools to do so.

I am looking for a way to make the connector attachment to the coax truly rugged! I have seen "manufactured" cables the have a strain relief where the cable and connector come together. Is there a way for the home user to do something similar?
