OK Dave, point well taken!

But the only time I've worked anyone right at the noise level was when Dima 
RA9USU sucked my CW signal out of the noise when he was at E30FB.  Took him 10 
tries to finally get my call.  I admit 1 dB might have made a difference for 
that Q!

True ... although noise doesn't care when or where you put your signal, and 1 
dB can sometimes make a valuable difference if you happen to be right at the 
level of the mud.

And, of course, there is always the possibility that the folks you're competing 
against are just as adroit in signal placement as you are.  If there are enough 
of them 1 dB could matter then as well.
