My particular preference for the multi-op/limited multi-op is a breakdown by
power rather than number of bands. This would bring it on-line with the
single op classes. Besides, as we all know the key to continue to have
access to the various bands is activity. If we force a station to only
operate a certain amount of bands when they have a capacity to operate more
only hinders our future on these bands. I was involved in a discussion with
ARRL re: using more bands than the 4 if you are operating limited multi-op.
Their feeling was it was legal but not what the rule was intended for. Even
if the results were sent in as a check log. I would suggest a 150 or 200
watt limit up to 432 mhz and 10 watts above that. Granted that could give
you a whale of a microwave signal but propagation/height/antennas etc are
equalizers on those bands.
As far as 6 digit grids for scoring, for those people not using computers
for logging, it would be a nightmare. One of the local clubs has a 20+
person turnout for the January contest. Almost all are paper logs, with many
operating FM only. Unless the ARRL would take the raw log data and calculate
the point/distance value some people would not participate. Just like CQ
wanting logs to be submitted by email. You are forcing some individuals if
they want to participate to borrow a computer to participate. Yes, hard to
believe in 2002, not everyone has a computer and email address. Those are my
thoughts, take them as they come.
