Why not? Because it would be counterproductive. The big stations would
drop out, go back to HF, go back to EME, go back to meteor skeds, go back to
waiting for the openings, or go back to whatever else they enjoy doing.
They would be bored by such a contest. They would not be there to give the
longer-distance QSOs to the little guys and the guys with low bands only.
Everybody loses.

We have had some zany ideas of what to do with the VHF contest. Like cut
the June contest back to ABCD. We already almost have that with AB only in
the CQ VHF contest, which has generated a much lower level of interest and
activity than the ARRL June contest. It's there for those who want a chance
to win something with low bands only. But the zaniest idea of all is to
split the VHF contest into two simultaneous contests, neither of which is
appealing to the serious VHF/UHF enthusiast. The fun of the VHF contest is
being able to use all the modes of propagation and all the bands to make the
maximum score. With a split contest, no serious station trying for maximum
score on ABCD will waste time on the microwaves and nobody trying for
maximum score on the microwaves will waste time on ABCD except for 2M
liaison with stations he knows can go to the microwaves. Again, everybody
loses. Compared to the present setup, ABCD activity will be down and
microwave activity will be down.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The VHF contest works. It's fun. Keep in
it the incentive to improve, not limit, your station.

Sorry for the bandwidth, my last post on this thread.

Jim
