Hello all,

It was brought to my attention that there were a few questions and concerns
regarding the new VHF Single Operator Unlimited Categories that were added for
2015. I strongly encourage you to contact me directly if you ever have any
questions regarding ARRL contests and I will reply to you as quickly as I can.

First let me point out that these new categories are in no way related to the
work that the Ad-Hoc Subcommittee on VHF and Above is doing. These categories
were implemented based on the policy changes from the Programs and Services
Committee. The timing of implementation is understandably a bit confusing, but
we did make an attempt to publish the upcoming changes in the ARRL Contest
Update and in the QST contest announcement.

These new Unlimited categories allow for a Single Operator to use spotting
assistance without being re-categorized as a Multioperator. I have added a
short FAQ to the Overview section of the January VHF webpage:
http://www.arrl.org/january-vhf<https://exchange.arrl.org/owa/redir.aspx?C=-gA6Iq9W1kKrSsivP5y3tZhFp-HO_9EIBttLT-8oj5R6me-kmaiKRwAV2SqJE2WgrNn6RE7zreE.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.arrl.org%2fjanuary-vhf>.
There you will find an explanation of Spotting Assistance as defined by the
Contest Advisory Committee and a few other answers. Any questions that are sent
to me directly for clarification and that are relevant to the larger audience,
I will certainly add to the FAQ. I have also included new category definitions
in the General Rules for ARRL Contests Above 50 MHz
http://www.arrl.org/general-rules-for-arrl-contests-above-50-mhz and added a
Spotting Assistance definition to the General Rules for all ARRL Contests
http://www.arrl.org/general-rules-for-all-arrl-contests.

Again, please do not hesitate to contact me directly with questions regarding
these new categories or any questions involving the Contest Branch.

73,

Matt Wilhelm, W1MSW
