Hi Paul.   Speaking for myself MSK144 is my default digital mode on 50 and 144 
MHz.  

I believe there are other modes that are be better under certain conditions and 
uses but so far I'm quite happy with MSK144 as my first choice on the lower VHF 
frequencies.  (For example EME is one use where I believe there are better 
digital mode choices, but I can't really comment about EME.)
