Don't forget, VHF contests generally count contacts once per band,
without regard to mode.
So you don't get more points for working the same station on different
modes.

Interesting. Some of the digital voice modes have a data sub channel, so if

OK, Apologies to Jim here, but restating his opinion below, this would
mean logged as voice. The argument I was getting from others was that C4FM
and DSTAR modulation modes would double the count, one contact using FM
simplex, and a second contact using DSTAR or C4FM simplex would be
considered a different mode.
I disagreed with this idea, because modulation mode is not the decoder,
the human ear is. I asked because I think clarifying the ARRL field day
rules might be a good thing here.
Thank You,

as?
Hi guys,
Here is the answer we used last year for D-Star inquiries where audio goes
into a microphone and exits via a speaker:
*D-Star is like any other phone contacts. But, D-Star contacts in Field
Day MUST be Point to Point (aka peer-to-peer) – NOT THROUGH INTERNET
GATEWAYS and NOT THROUGH REPEATERS (with exception of Satellite
contacts). All contacts must be via RF from station A to station B.*
Hope this helps.

Call or email the ARRL Contest branch and ask them. They and only
they can give definitive answers to ARRL sponsored contest questions.
Share what they say with the rest of us. Asking questions like this
on here only invites speculation and misinformation. By the way, FCC
regulations have nothing to do with the contest rules. If the ARRL
wants to categorize digital voice as digital for the purposes of their
contests they can.

I just came from our local club planning meeting for ARRL Field Day.
We were discussing VHF/UHF modes like Fusion C4FM, DSTAR, and DMR.
When a ham speaks into the microphone and it comes out as C4FM, do we
log that in the logging program as digital or Voice?
The FCC believes, in it's heart of hearts, that it's Phone
regardless of the mode. At least until Title 47 of the code of
federal regulations is repealed.
IIRC, ARRL Field Day rules don't get that specific, but I assume
they follow part 97, so phone.
